From Brisbane - The journey is approximately 3.5 hours' drive north of Brisbane City. Join the Bruce Highway and stay north on this route through Gympie, then take the Maryborough exit off the highway onto the Maryborough - Hervey Bay Road.
From Maryborough follow the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road North toward Hervey Bay (16.8 kms). At the large roundabout, take the Booral Road exit and travel for approximately 12 kms. Then, turn right into River Heads Road and travel a further 9.6kms to arrive at Kingfisher Bay's Mainland Reception located at River Heads Shopping Village (on your right-hand side). River Heads Road is locally named Ariadne Street.
From Bundaberg - The journey is approximately 1.5 hours' drive south. Follow the Bruce Highway south.Turn off at Torbanlea and follow signs to Hervey Bay (21kms). Turn left onto the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road. Travel 0.7kms and turn right on to Booral Road. Travel for approximately 12 kms, then turn right into River Heads Road and travel 9.6kms to arrive at Kingfisher Bay's Mainland Reception located at River Heads Shopping Village (on your right-hand side). River Heads Road is locally named Ariadne Street.

You are advised to arrive at the Mainland Reception River Heads to check-in 40 minutes prior to the ferry departure time. A courtesy shuttle from Mainland Reception to the jetty will leave 10 minutes prior to departure for our walk-on passengers. Self-drivers will be given further instruction by the Reception team.
As the world's largest sand island, the destination comprises primarily of sand tracks - the only sealed roads on K'gari are within the Kingfisher Bay Resort grounds, and within the grounds of K'gari Beach Resort (formerly Eurong Beach Resort) on the eastern coast.
Standard vehicles can still travel over on the barge and be utilised within the resort (the ferry lands directly at the resort's entrance), however are not suitable for driving beyond the perimeter of the resort property. Please note that travellers do not need their own 4WD to experience Fraser Island, as there are a range of guided tours departing the resort daily to the island's top bucket list locations.
If you do plan to navigate the sand tracks yourself, a 4WD vehicle with suitable clearance is required, as well as a driving permit. Please visit the Queensland Parks and Wildlife website for more details, tyre pressure recommendations and updated track conditions.
